Watermelon fries are super easy to make and are just really fun to eat. I like them on warm days, as a snack in between. Finally, it’s melon season again and I love the fruit in all sorts of shapes and variations. I’m particularly fond of watermelons, so I always have some in the fridge. Summer is just around the corner and I’m looking forward to many opportunities to make these delicious watermelon fries.
Watermelon fries
The preparation of these fruity fries is simple and fast. Cut watermelon in half, scoop out flesh and cut into the shape of fries. I also add the juice of a freshly squeezed lime and some grated lime zest. That’s all there is to it and off we go with this wonderful, refreshing snack.
Note: If you are not sure if your melon is ripe, tap the fruit with finger joints. If there is a hollow, dark sound, then the melon is ripe.
I chose watermelon, however, you can use any other melon of your choice for today’s fries.
There are an incredible number of different types of melons. Starting with the popular watermelon, which in itself is again divided into different varieties. I find the names of the melons alone irresistibly delicious: Crimson Sweet, Janosik (with yellow flesh), Sugar Baby, Moon and Stars, Golden Midget or Primaorange. Besides watermelons, there are also the sugar melons. The best known is the cantaloupe melon, less known are the varieties Charentais melon, Futuro melon or Galia.
How healthy are actually watermelons?
Watermelons are often underestimated in terms of their nutrients. By the way, here’s a little fun fact, did you know that watermelons belong to the genus of Cucurbits and not to the fruits? They can also help you lose weight quite well, as they have only 24 kilocalories per 100g. Here are the main nutrients and phytochemicals found in watermelons:
- Vitamin C (important for a healthy immune system)
- Vitamin A (for skin and healthy eyes)
- Vitamin B6 (especially important for brain and nerves)
- Iron (for blood formation)
- Potassium
- Lycopene (antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, beneficial for bone health & neutralizes free radicals).
- Betcarotene and citrulline (antioxidants, strengthen the heart and circulation, relax blood vessels and have a positive effect on blood pressure and blood sugar levels).
The watermelon fries are:
- Refreshing
- Nutritious
- Quickly made
- Perfect for hot temperatures
- fruity
You love watermelon as much as I do? Then I look forward to a review at the bottom of this page. If you post a picture, feel free to use the hashtag #veganevibes.
