Ayurveda – The art of holistic living

What is Ayurveda and why is it so special?

Last year, I was able to fulfill a long-cherished dream: a Panchakarma treatment at the new Ayurveda Hotel ‘Ayurpura’, nestled in the breathtaking scenery of the Dolomites. A week full of peace, healing and holistic self-care awaited me – and the best thing about it: I was able to book the treatment vegan!

In this article, I will take you with me on this journey. I will not only tell you what I experienced during this special week and how the process of a Panchakarma cure ‘light’ but also explain what Ayurveda actually is and why it is so special. Finally, I share my personal conclusion and answer the exciting question: Would I do this treatment again?

Ayurveda, the “knowledge of life“, is one of the oldest holistic health systems in the world. Originating in India over 3,000 years ago, it is based on the deep connection between body, mind and soul. Unlike many modern medical approaches, Ayurveda not only looks at the symptoms of an illness, but aims to identify the underlying cause and restore inner balance.

The special thing about Ayurveda is its individual approach:
Each person is considered unique, with a specific combination of three doshas – Vata, Pitta and Kapha. These doshas represent the basic bioenergetic forces in the body and determine how we react to external and internal influences. If one of these doshas is out of balance, complaints or illnesses can arise.

Ayurveda offers a variety of tools to restore balance: from a type-appropriate diet and herbal remedies to yoga and meditation. It is not only about healing the body, but also about clearing the mind and promoting well-being on all levels.

What makes Ayurveda special is its harmony with nature. It teaches us to live in harmony with the rhythms of nature – be it by choosing the right foods at the right time of year or through daily rituals that stabilize our energy levels. In a hectic world, Ayurveda offers a calm, grounded approach to strengthening body and mind.

For me, it was precisely this holistic and mindful perspective that motivated me to take a Panchakarma treatment. Ayurveda is not just a health science, but an invitation to live a more conscious and fulfilling life.

Benefits of Ayurveda for body, mind and soul

Ayurveda offers far more than just a method of healing – it is a holistic lifestyle that aims to promote inner balance and strengthen health on all levels. But what are the specific benefits of Ayurveda for body, mind and soul?

1. body: strengthening, healing and balance

2nd mind: clarity and inner peace

3. soul: connection and harmony

Ayurveda reminds us that true health is more than the absence of disease. It is a state in which we feel good in our bodies, are mentally clear and feel a deep inner contentment. This holistic approach makes Ayurveda a source of inspiration and healing for all areas of life.

Panchakarma – cleansing and healing from within

What does Panchakarma mean?

Panchakarma – one of the best-known and most effective therapies in Ayurveda – offers a holistic cleansing of body and mind. The name is made up of the Sanskrit words ‘Pancha’ (five) and ‘Karma’ (actions) and describes five special treatments that aim to restore inner balance and strengthen your well-being in the long term.

A classic Panchakarma treatment usually lasts three weeks. However, I deliberately opted for a ‘Panchakarma light’ to start with in order to see how my body reacts to it first. You may now be wondering: can this cure also be done vegan? The answer is yes! At least in Ayurpura, a plant-based alternative can be used for the classic ghee – such as coconut oil or linseed oil. This means that a vegan Panchakarma treatment is also possible and the principles of Ayurveda can harmonize wonderfully with a plant-based lifestyle.

The philosophy behind Panchakarma

Ayurveda assumes that toxins (ama) accumulate in the body over time as a result of stress, an unhealthy diet or an irregular lifestyle. These toxins disrupt the balance of the doshas – the three bioenergetic forces Vata, Pitta and Kapha – and can lead to long-term health problems. Panchakarma is a holistic method of eliminating these toxins and cleansing the body from the inside out.

A customized process

The start of a Panchakarma treatment is always individual – after all, no two bodies are the same. An experienced Ayurveda doctor, such as Dr. Karth in my case (thank you very much!), first makes a detailed diagnosis in order to tailor the treatments perfectly to individual needs.

My treatment at the Ayurpura Hotel started on the first day with the first treatments – a gentle introduction to this special experience. On the second day, I had a detailed consultation with Dr. Karth, which lasted about an hour. He asked many questions, examined me physically and carried out typical Ayurvedic diagnoses, such as feeling my pulse, palpating my organs and examining my tongue.

Relax after the treatment

The result:
An individual treatment plan that was specially tailored to me. This included not only the daily diet, but also all the treatments that were carried out during the cure. In addition to the treatment, Dr. Parth prescribed me several Ayurvedic dietary supplements, which I should take not only during the treatment, but also for several months afterwards.

The goals of Panchakarma

The main aim of Panchakarma is to detoxify the body, strengthen the body’s self-healing powers and restore the balance of the doshas. The treatment also has a calming effect on the mind and promotes deep regeneration.

Panchakarma is more than just a medical treatment – it is a journey to oneself that purifies the body, clears the mind and nourishes the soul.

The benefits of a Panchakarma cure

A Panchakarma treatment offers much more than just a break from everyday life. It is a deep cleansing for body, mind and soul that can lead to long-term health and inner balance. But what exactly makes this treatment so special?

The five phases of a Panchakarma cure: cleansing for body, mind and soul

A Panchakarma cure is far more than just a sequence of treatments – it is a deep cleansing process that brings body and mind into a state of harmony and vitality. The cure follows five clearly structured phases that complement each other:

A day in my Panchakarma cure: treatments, nutrition and rituals

My daily routine at Ayurveda Hotel Ayurpura

A stay at Ayurveda Hotel Ayurpura is like a journey into another world – a world of relaxation, mindfulness and healing. My typical daily routine during the Panchakarma treatment was structured, yet incredibly soothing. Here is an insight into my daily routine during the cure:

An early start to the day

My alarm clock rang at 6 a.m. and I got ready for the day. The first yoga class started at 7:30 am. There were two classes, one for beginners and one for advanced practitioners. I loved these classes! The teachers, especially Sean from Australia, were great and made the yoga sessions a highlight. The yoga room is oriented so that the sun comes around the corner for morning yoga and gently shines on your face.

A breakfast that leaves nothing to be desired

After yoga, I got changed and went for breakfast. The choice was simply overwhelming: various porridges (Ayurveda, turmeric, rice and classic porridge) with delicious toppings such as stewed plums, pears or apples. There were also alkaline broths, dried fruit, nuts, seeds, soy yogurt, fresh apples and an incredible selection of Ayurvedic teas. What was particularly exciting was that almost everything was vegan and always gluten-free. Lemon and ginger water were also on offer, although ginger water is only recommended until 4 pm due to its stimulating effect. For breakfast, there was also an Ayurveda post every day, with lots of interesting tips and knowledge about Ayurveda.

Nature experiences and free time

In the mornings, I either had treatments or free time. When I had time off, I was drawn to the surrounding nature. Welschnofen offers fantastic hiking trails for all levels of difficulty, from relaxed walks to challenging mountain hikes. A particular highlight was the trip to Lake Carezza, which (weather permitting) reflects the Latemar and Catinaccio mountains.

Lunch: The main meal of the day

In Ayurveda, lunch is the most important meal of the day – and it was a real feast! Various small dishes, Ayurvedic soups and everything was vegan – even the feta was plant-based. You could get seconds if you wanted, which I did from time to time. You could also get tea, apple slices and rice cakes at any time.

Ayurveda tip:
You should drink very little with your meal. In the western world, we are used to drinking with our meals. However, water and other drinks dilute the digestive juices and have a counterproductive effect on digestion. Therefore, you should stop drinking 30 minutes before and after eating. However, hot tea during the meal is permitted.

What did a typical lunch look like?

  • Miso seaweed broth
  • Tri-colored quinoa with carrots, masala and coriander
  • Fennel and tofu curry with saffron and mango

Afternoon: treatments and relaxation

In the afternoons, I either had treatments or free time. Before my treatments, I often enjoyed the bio sauna or a dip in the pool. The treatments were a dream: from intensive detox massages and forehead pours to herbal stamp massages, peelings and navel casts. The therapists were incredibly competent and warm. The massages were intensive, but that’s exactly what I needed.

Typical Ayurveda massages were Abhyangam (full body detoxification massage), Padha Abhyangam (foot massage), Shirodhara (forehead oil pouring), Udvarthan Snigdha (Oily Powder Massage), Nabhi Basti (oil pouring on navel), Churna Potali (herbal stamp massage)

Evening relaxation

Every evening at 6 pm there was a guided meditation, usually held by an Ayurveda therapist or the doctor Dr. Karth. I was particularly impressed by Yoga Nidra – a deeply relaxing form of meditation.

Light dinner and cozy finale

Dinner was a smaller meal so as not to overload the digestive fire (“Agni”). At first I thought I wouldn’t be full, but the soup and the second course were perfect. After the meal, I sometimes sat by the fireplace with other guests. The atmosphere was warm and I met wonderful people – a mixed crowd of young women, men, couples and older guests who were at Ayurpura for a variety of reasons.

What did a typical dinner look like?

  • Zuccaganoush, mango, sage, sesame seeds
  • Cream of spinach soup with aromatic oil
  • Feta (vegan) with raddicio, hemp seeds and plums

My conclusion

The week at Ayurpura was a wonderful experience for me. I felt completely at ease, learned a lot and returned home with new energy. A three-week Panchakarma treatment is definitely on my wish list – and I hope to have the opportunity to do so soon.

From food to relaxation: how Ayurveda shapes everyday life

A day at the Ayurveda Hotel Ayurpura is more than just a vacation – it is a journey to yourself. From the very first moment, you are whisked away into a world of slowing down and mindfulness, in which every aspect of the daily routine is well thought out. From the morning yoga practice that gently awakens body and mind, to personalized treatments and delicious vegan and Ayurvedic meals, every experience is designed to restore inner balance.

Even small details, such as the choice of warming ginger water or soothing cinnamon porridge for breakfast, help to ensure that everyday life at Ayurpura is not only healing, but also a pleasure for all the senses. Complemented by relaxing walks in the picturesque Dolomites and evening meditations, the connection between nutrition, exercise and relaxation is tangibly experienced.

At the end of the day, you not only feel refreshed, but also deeply inspired to integrate this mindful way of life into your own everyday life.

Challenges and highlights: My personal experiences

What surprised me and what I learned

Challenges and highlights: My personal experiences

It was my first Panchakarma treatment and I am incredibly glad that I took the opportunity to go to the Hotel Ayurpura. The setting in Welschnofen alone is a dream – the Catinaccio/Rosengarten garden beams out at you and you immediately go into relaxation mode.

Of course I had my doubts beforehand:
What will it be like to spend a week on a cure? After all, I had never done anything like this before and had no idea what to expect. Would I be bored? What would happen if I didn’t like the food or reacted negatively to the treatments? But as is so often the case, you think too much in advance – in the end, everything was completely different to what I had feared.

There was no trace of boredom! The time literally flew by between yoga, meditation, treatments, sauna, walks and hikes. However, there is one thing I would do even better next time: limit my time on my cell phone even more. Sometimes I let myself be tempted to surf on my cell phone, even though I knew it would be better to put it aside. Next time, I would take a journal and some books with me to avoid temptation in the first place.

The food was another highlight. In the restaurant, you had the choice of either sitting at an individual table or sitting at the social table to talk to other guests. I always opted for my own table. It felt a little unusual at first because you’re used to being distracted either by conversations or your cell phone. But after a short time, I really enjoyed the peace and quiet. It was a special experience to concentrate completely on the food – a small but important lesson in mindfulness.

Would I do a Panchakarma treatment again?

The answer is quite clear: Yes! A Panchakarma treatment is a real treat for body and mind, and I am convinced that it is one of the best preventive measures there is. At the same time, it offers a wonderful opportunity to learn more about Ayurveda and discover how to integrate this knowledge into everyday life.

Of course, it is a challenge to maintain all the good habits that were so beneficial during the cure once you have returned to your everyday life. But many small things are easy to implement: for example, drinking warm drinks – even in summer – and avoiding ice cubes. Integrating yoga and short meditation sessions is also easier than you might think, and they make a noticeable difference.

Next time I would like to try the full, three-week cure. I am sure that a longer Panchakarma treatment could have even more profound effects and would further strengthen the positive influence on body and mind.

Thank you very much for your attention, if you have any questions about the cure, please feel free to contact me at any time, also on Instagram.
